Description
Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is one of the most distinctive, provocative and influential painters of the 20th century.
His singular aesthetic was a violent intersection between abstraction and expressionistic portraiture.
While the subjects in his paintings were often identified, whether they be friends, lovers or even the Pope, distinctive facial features were typically smeared and distorted.
This work is a paradigm of Bacon's style. His unique approach to figuration produced humans undone by their visceral, almost violent distortions. In this image, a sole figure lies nude on a bed; warped limbs splayed apart above a heavily distorted head. Like all of Bacon's subjects, this figure dances between depictions of raw sexuality, violence, and internal torment.
This lithograph was based on Bacon's oil painting of the same name from 1966; which is currently owned by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Today Bacon's canvases fetch astounding prices at auction, frequently above the $25 million mark.
Galerie Maeght, the legendary left-bank Parisian gallery, exhibited Bacon's work and published his multiples.
Caviar20 recommends the film Love is the Devil; a dark biography on Bacon's life starring a young Daniel Craig and Tilda Swinton.
