František Drtikol

(Czech, 1883–1961)

b>František Drtikol was a pioneering Czech avant-garde artist. Best known for his black-and-white photos of nudes within abstract sets, Drtikol incorporated elements of Art Nouveau and Act Deco into work. “I let the beauty of the line itself make an impact, without embellishment, by suppressing everything that is secondary,” the artist once reflected. Born March 3, 1883 in Príbram, Austro-Hungarian Empire, he moved to Munich to study painting and photography, then to Prague in 1907, where he opened his own studio. His work often juxtaposed the curvature of the female form with geometric abstractions, eliciting simple yet evocative compositions. He died on January 13, 1961 in Prague, Czechoslovakia at the age of 77, having had a significant influence on a generation younger photographers, including Jaroslav Rössler and Josef Vetrovsky. Today, Drtikol’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, among others.
