The artist FRINGE with his unique way of expression is one of the most successful rising art stars in South Africa. As a companion of his style is Faith47, furthermore also Sindiso Nyoni. All three have their artistic roots in street painting and comic illustration, which elevates them into a gallery environment. But FRINGES’ obvious playfulness hides a deeper meaning – he works with a recurring repertoire of characters and symbols. FRINGE does not reveal his identity and rarely gives interviews. This leaves it up to the viewer to draw his own conclusions about what the artist wants to express when he combines painting and collage on canvas. An interview in the context of the exhibition “Fringe. The Very Definition” (2017): his “embedded motifs” as Fringe calls them, point to a “persistent contradiction between recognizable and spatial things with controlled and uncontrolled forces, precision versus indeterminacy, coming together to convey my message. In other words, on canvas, FRINGE creates a space of existence for the famous characters and shows how the preconceived opinion about them varies from viewer to viewer. And from place to place. No single person has a uniform image of Marilyn Monroe, Mahatma Gandhi, Mickey Mouse or Tintin – but we all believe that these historical icons are so firmly anchored in our consciousness that they are synonymous for all of us. His works have been in several group exhibitions besides Joy Labinjo, Amoako Boafo, DENNIS OSADEBE, SATORU KOIZUMI, MAKIKO KUDO, JENNY HOLZER, ELMGREEN & DRAGSET, ALI BANISADR, OTIS KWAME KYE QUAICOE, ALAKE SHILLING, YUE MINJUN, HEATHER DAY, FERRARI SHEPPARD, DONNA HUANCA, CAI GUO-QIANG, SIMPHIWE NDZUBE, LINA IRIS VIKTOR, CLAIRE TABOURET, ROBERT NAVA, GRACE LYNNE HAYNES, JIA AILI, TOMÁS SÁNCHEZ, ANGEL OTERO, JAMES JEAN, HEBRU BRANTLEY, STICKYMONGER, AMANI LEWIS, CLAUDIA COMTE, SUSUMU KAMIJO, JOSÉ PARLÁ, JAKE & DINOS CHAPMAN, FRIEDRICH KUNATH, THENJIWE NIKI NKOSI, MARCUS BRUTUS, SUPER FUTURE KID, JOHNSON TSANG, WANG YAN CHENG, KEVIN FRANCIS GRAY, TRUDY BENSON, JENNY BROSINSKI, JONNY NIESCHE, PATRICK MARTINEZ, KOUR POUR, JULES DE BALINCOURT, PHOEBE COLLINGS-JAMES, MARGO WOLOWIEC, JAVIER CALLEJA, DRIFT, DEVIN TROY STROTHER, ZACH HARRIS, KATRIN FRIDRIKS, MICHAEL KAGAN, DUSTIN YELLIN, PAUL INSECT, LU YANG, JOAKIM OJANEN, CALI THORNHILL DEWITT, VHILS, ADEL ABDESSEMED, LARA ZANKOUL, TOMOKAZU MATSUYAMA, FELIPE PANTONE, MARC QUINN, CHRIS SUCCO, CONRAD JON GODLY, JEN STARK, BLONDEY MCCOY, PACO POMET, FRÉDÉRIC PLATÉUS, ELLIOT DODD, JAN KALÁB, Narcissister, Derrick Adams, Firelei Báez, Katherine Bernhardt, Sanford Biggers, Phoebe Boswell, Stephanie Brooks, Tom Burr, Sarah Cain, Jordan Casteel, Judy Chicago, George Condo, Moyra Davey, Delphine Desane, Alejandro Diaz, Mark Dion, Cheryl Donegan, Jane Ellison, Jeff Elrod, Liam Gillick Martine Gutierrez, Rachel Harrison, Mary Heilmann, Cindy Hinant, Anna Sew, Jonas Elliott, Jerome Brown Jr., Nina Katchadourian, Scott King, Jutta Koether, Andrew Kuo, Liz Larner, Monica Majoli, Eddie Martinez, Yinka Shonibare, Shona McAndrew, Michael Jones McKean, Harland Miller, Azikiwe Mohammed, Mariko Mori, Matthew Morrocco, Senga Nengudi, Elizabeth Peyton, Virginia Poundstone, Kameelah Janan, Rasheed Scott, Reeder, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Deborah Roberts, Carlos Rolón, Tajh Rust, Tschabalala Self, David Shrigley, David Shrobe, Keith Sonnier, Vaughn Spann, Philip Taaffe, Tony Tasset, Betty Tompkins, John Waters, Peter Williams and Jordy Kerwick.
