Fritz Klimsch

(German, 1870–1960)

Fritz Klimsch was a German sculptor best known for his bronze female nudes. His crouching, classicized figures were incredibly popular with the Nazi regime. Born on February 10, 1870 in Frankfurt, Germany, Klimsch received his formal training at the Royal College for the Academic Fine Arts in Berlin before studying under fellow German sculptor Fritz Schaper. In 1898, Klimsch became a founding member of the Berlin Secession, an art association that rejected the conservative Association of Berlin Artists. During the Nazi Germany era, he became one of the most sought-after sculptors, producing busts of prominent figures Wilhelm Frick, Erich Ludendorff, and Adolf Hitler. The artist’s association with the party made him a controversial figure in the postwar era. Klimsch died on February 13, 1960 in Freiburg iim Breisgau, Germany.
