Description
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond.
The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They worked across various media including photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installations, multiples, and performance.
Thematic continuity was a key element for General Idea, who utilized longevity as an avenue to delve deeper into, build upon, and evolve with the complex and nuanced subject matter they took on.
As a result, their extensive oeuvre is comprised of numerous multiples and editions that expand the scope and dissemination of their narratives and fictional worlds.
Original works on paper by General Idea rarely come to market, making "Nova" a unique opportunity to acquire a drawing from the first chapter of their career.
"Nova" offers a rare glimpse into General Idea's creative process and ideation from the era. In this work, the word 'Nova' is stretched diagonally across the page and fragmented by three horizontal lines that run through the letters. The lines divide the letters into four segments, creating varying perspectives at each intersection and an unexpected graphic appeal.
Condition: very good
