Giorgio Vasari
(Italian, 1511–1574)
Biography
Giorgio Vasari was an Italian artist, architect, and writer best known for his comprehensive book of biographies Lives of the Artists (1550). In the book, Vasari used an anecdotal style of writing to discuss the life and work of Giotto, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci, among several others. “Art owes its origin to Nature herself,” he once said. “This beautiful creation, the world, supplied the first model, while the original teacher was that divine intelligence which has not only made us superior to the other animals, but like God Himself, if I may venture to say it.” Born on July 30, 1511 in Arezzo, Italy, he went to Florence as a youth to study architecture and painting under Andrea del Sarto. Under the patronage of the Medici family, Vasari produced frescoes and was the architect of the Uffizi gallery. His acclaimed book of biographies stemmed from a desire to chart the course of Italian art. Tracking its cultural trajectory from Classical Rome, through the Dark Ages, and into its resurgence during the Renaissance. During his life, Vasari lived luxuriously and was highly regarded by artists and patrons alike. He died on June 27, 1574 in Florence, Italy. Today, the artist's works are held in the collections of the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and the Prado Museum in Madrid, among others.
