Giovanni Giacometti

(Swiss, 1868–1933)

Giovanni Giacometti was a Swiss painter best known for his Divisionist alpine landscapes, bold color, and Post-Impressionist techniques. Born on March 7, 1868 in Stampa, Switzerland, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Munich, where he became influenced by French Impressionists and befriended fellow painter Cuno Amiet. In 1894, Giacometti met his mentor Giovanni Segantini, who introduced him to Symbolism and large-scale panoramic landscape painting. Segantini ultimately helped his friend emerge from a depression, and encouraged him to persevere in his search to find an artistic mode of expression. After Segantini’s death, he went on to exhibit with the German Expressionist group, Die Brücke, in Zürich during the early 1900s, and was the subject of a retrospective in 1912 at the Kunsthalle Bern and the Kunsthalle Basel. His works are in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, among others. He is also notably the father of the artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti. He died on June 25, 1933 in Glion, Switzerland.
