Description
Annunciation, carved mahogany sculpture 36x20x7 inches, signed G. Derujinsky and dated 1926 low center reverse. Provenance: San Diego Museum of Art, First Presbyterian Church San Diego Exhibited: Exhibition of Recent Sculptures by Gleb Derujinsky, Knoedler Gallery, Bond Street, London 1928 #11 of the catalog; Brooklyn Museum exhibition 1930, #86 of the catalog; American Paintings and Sculptures 44th Annual Exhibition Art Institute of Chicago 1931 #282 of the catalog Bibliography: Irina Bulazel “Gleb W. Derujinsky, Sculpture” Istituto Arti Grafiche Mengarelli Rome Italy 2002 – description on p. 56, illustrated on p. 36.[Dr. Michael Mezzatesta, Director Emeritus of Duke University Museum of Art wrote about this item: “I like it very much. Shows him thinking in a new way not only about the composition but also the emotions that the news generated for Mary and the Gabriel. The poses of both are without precedent as far as I can remember and the kneeling, imploring posture of Gabriel right in front of Mary is unprecedented. The group is very emotive, which true to its source. Plus the smooth, mannered poses and smooth surface is appealing. You can see the artist was thinking of finding a new way to express on age old theme. Very appealing work!”]
