Condition Report
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. Areas of all preserved impasto are visible in the sitter's turban. Fine lines of discoloured retouching have become visible in areas of the background. Inspection under ultraviolet confirms the above and further reveals an extensive campaign of fine lines of retouching throughout. The picture is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note
This work is a copy after a lost portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller of the celebrated French painter Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer known from an engraving by George White, dated 1715.1 A drawing for the lost painting, dated circa 1697–99, is in the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.2
