Condition Report
The canvas is unlined and the surface is stable. The painting is covered in an old, dirty and discoloured varnish. The canvas appears loose on its stretcher at the top corners. There are minor paint losses scattered across the surface, more significant ones are visible on the lower left corner and lower edge, each measuring approximately 3 cm. Another small tear on the background in line with the sitter's eyes, measures approx. 1 cm. There is a slightly larger horizontal tear on the upper left side of the painting, near the edge, measuring approx. 4.5 cm. There are drift marks on the sitter's cape and minor retouchings on the mantle corresponding to the right shoulder, right hand and lower left. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals further ones in the background along the right edge, under the sitter's nose and his left eye. Overall the painting appears in moderate condition. Offered in a carved wood frame.
