Guglielmo von Plüschow
(German, 1852–1930)
Biography
Guglielmo von Plüschow was a German photographer known for his sensual, distinctively posed nudes. Working in Italy for most of his career, Plüschow’s work often portrays young men in biblical or Neoclassical poses and garb, set in Arcadian-like landscapes. Born Wilhelm von Plüschow on August 18, 1852 in Wismar, Germany into an aristocratic family, he moved to Rome to work as a wine merchant in the early 1870s. He was often the target of scrutiny and arrest by Italian law enforcement for his alleged corruption and seduction of minors—many of his photographs feature children and youths—and was known to have sexual relationships with some of his male models. The artist eventually fled back to Berlin in 1910, where he remained until his death on January 3, 1930.
