Hartung’s work took on a more sculptural quality in the 1960s as he began to scratch lines into blocks of color in his paintings. His approach got increasingly experimental – he used different kinds of tools such as coans, brushes, hooks, brooms and knifes. It becomes a vital influence not only on the École de Paris but also later on the arts in Germany.
