Hans Olsen
(Danish, 1919–1992)
Biography
Hans Olsen was a Danish furniture designer best known for his innovative use of bent laminated wood, as seen his iconic Bikini Chair (1968). Characteristic of mid-century design, Olsen’s work features swooping organic curves and the melding of multiple materials in a single piece. Born in 1919 in Denmark, he went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy under noted designer Kaare Klint from 1941 until 1943. Olsen started his own studio in 1953, and began exhibiting work at the Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen to much acclaim. Though he was not considered a part of the mainstream Danish Modern School, he did make pieces for some of the well-known Danish manufacturers like Bramin Møbler and Juul Kistensen. Olsen died in 1992 in Denmark.
