Description
This mask-like golden head of a puma is both dazzling and arresting, its lustrous surface beguiling the viewer while its hollow, unseeing eyes add a haunting, almost supernatural quality. In creating this piece, the artist was inspired by the ancient Inca civilisation, who regarded the puma as a symbol of strength and wisdom. The artwork also takes name from the ancient Inca capital city of Cusco, that is said to have been built in the shape of a puma.
Gold as a material has long associations with the Inca empire, and this precious metal is deeply entwined in the history and mythology of this ancient civilisation. Here, Harumi elevates the majesty of the puma by using solid gold, the uneven surface and irregularity of the undulation reflecting the imperfections of nature, and underlining its hand-crafted creation. In addition to this, the details of the creature's markings around its eyes are rendered in lapis lazuli, a crystal that is associated with royalty and the divine. Its intense blue contrasts vividly with the gold, and almost appears to carve narrow channels of tears, lending the work a sublime vulnerability.
