Heidi Hahn is a contemporary American painter, known for her works featuring a vibrant palette and melting figures. Hahn’s wax-infused oil paintings often depict female forms in narrative scenes, alluding to artists such as
Helen Frankenthaler. “I think the characters in my paintings try to convey an atmospheric feeling rather than telling a story. They want to be felt rather than just seen.” Hahn has said of her work, “I love the idea that my paintings can be this one continuous moment. The viewer gets to meet up with this woman, or women, going about their day, and we just get little glimpses. I find the seriality in that comforting.” Hahn was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1982. She received her BFA in fine art from Cooper Union in 2006, and her master’s degree from Yale University in 2014. Hahn has been featured in many solo and group shows, including her 2017 solo show at Jack Hanley Gallery,
The Future is Elsewhere (If it Breaks Your Heart), and 2017’s group exhibition
Engender at Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, California. Hahn has also been awarded residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in Madison, ME, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, among others. Hahn is currently an acting professor of painting and drawing at Alfred University, New York. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
