Additional Details
Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana; Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Holton Rower, the grandson of Alexander Calder, pours gallons of paint on to plywood panels to create his "pour paintings". Rower allows the paint to flair out and pool on the surface, creating contrasting bands of brilliant color. The effect is that of spontaneity and playfulness, but we are also aware of the artist's guiding hand in the process of creation, as the support upon which the paint is "spilled" is one carefully constructed by the artist. It is akin to performance art and the textured final product reminiscent relief sculpture.
