Description
Condition: Fair to Good - One arm with visible repairs and patches along cast lines. Some separation to cast joints in area.
Hugo Lederer's masterpiece "The Fencer" "Der Fechter' from the cast of 1903 depicts the quintessential muscular male nude in a classic pose. It represents a deep understanding of anatomy and Lederer masterfully executes it with graceful ease. With just one prop, the fencer's sword, the statue is about a perfect harmony of component parts and it exudes gravitas. The sculpture performs equally well with direct light as it does in silhouette. In this work by Lederer, we think more of non-German sculptors such as Rodin or Canova as naturalistic influences. The Martin & Piltzing Foundry of Berlin in 1901 was the foundry for the original castings of "de Fechter" by Hugo Lederer. In the 1930' s the Gladenbeck foundry did later castings but they were smaller in size. Based on the inscription on the back of the base Guss. Martin. u. Piltzing. Berlin this casting was done at the original foundry. There is some damage to the bronze. Most visible is the crack line of the right shoulder cast joint The right was added at the foundry. This was a common practice among some sculptures to piece together their statues. The tip of the sword has been bent towards the plinth and reattached. Martin & Piltzing foundry, Berlin - The Bronze is a later cast after a model by Hugo Lederer.
