Hunt Slonem

(American, born 1951)

Hunt Slonem is an American painter whose work uniquely combines representational imagery with Abstract Expressionist renderings. Best known for his colorful paintings of tropical birds, butterflies, and rabbits, he is considered an integral member of the Neo-Expressionist movement of which Julian Schnabel and Georg Baselitz are also members. Slonem’s playful paintings often depict multiples of the same subject in a loosely composed grid, rendered with gestural brushstrokes and a witty sense of humor. Born on July 18, 1951 in Kittery, ME, Slonem went on to receive a BA in art and art history at Tulane University in New Orleans, and later attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine alongside Alex Katz and Alice Neel. Slonem’s work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, among others. He lives and works in New York, NY.
