Ilse D’Hollander
(Belgian, 1968–1997)
Biography
Ilse D’Hollander was a Belgian painter whose works merged perceptual qualities of light and color with an abstract sensibility similar to that of Nicolas De Staël. D’Hollander often referenced landscapes of the Flemish countryside as well as vernacular objects in her work. “A painting comes into being when ideas and the act of painting coincide,” she once said. Born on May 18, 1968 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, she studied at the Hoger Instituut voor Beeldenede Kunsten, St. Lucas, in Ghent during the late 1980s. Working in the vein of her mentor Raoul De Keyser as well as that of Luc Tuymans, D’Hollander was liberated by the possibilities of painting during a time many critics had suggested it was bankrupt of meaning. Tragically, the artist committed suicide at the age of 29, on January 30, 1997 in Paulatem, Belgium. The gallerist David Nash once wrote of her work, “Floating color fields in soft earthy shades evoke feelings of calm and tranquility; abstract, and free from much literal representation of the world around us.”
