Ingrid Scheibler (American, born )

Timeline

Ingrid Scheibler’s large-scale, bold and graphic paintings are a pictorial conversation in real time and the idea of dialogue is central to her work. Her paintings are loose, free, formalist and graphic all at once. She approaches the canvas in an improvisational dialogue where the physical space of the canvas contains the conversation as it is played out through marks, gestures, intention, accident, space, and materials. This process is animated by both formal concerns and a psychological awareness of the facts of embodiment and embeddedness in a web of relationships. Some of her work uses textiles as both symbolic and compositional elements which are pushed through the surface, looped and sewn into compositions making the paintings more sculptural and kinetic. Born in 1964, Scheibler has a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, England. A former philosophy professor, she works in Boston and Wellfleet, Ma.
