Jack Butler Yeats

(Irish, 1871–1957)

Jack Butler Yeats was an Irish painter, perhaps best known for being the brother of famed poet W.B. Yeats. Hailed as one of the most important Irish artists of the 20th century, the Expressionist painter used thick, smeared paint and visible palette knife marks to create his works, which often depicted landscapes, gypsies, and Celtic myths. Born on August 29, 1871 in London, England, he grew up in Sligo, Ireland but went back and forth between London and Dublin throughout his life. Yeats was a friend of Samuel Beckett, who said of him: “Yeats is with the great of our time... because he brings light, as only the great dare to bring light, to the issueless predicament of existence.” He had great success as a visual artist and illustrator, but also published plays, novels, and poetry. Today, his works are in the collections of the National Gallery in Dublin, the Tate Gallery in London, the Ulster Museum in Belfast, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He died on March 28, 1957 in Dublin, Ireland.
