Condition Report
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The oak support has a slight convex profile with horizontal wood grain.
It is stable and well preserved.
The signature shows little sign of ageing.
There is a repaired central horizontal joint, slightly stepped, with minor associated paint loss.
A reinforced horizontal hairline fracture, approx. 20cm long, is visible in the top left of the composition; a 30cm long horizontal hairline fracture is visible in the lower right. Both have minor paint loss along them.
The paint layer is stable and secure and in very good original preserved condition; there has been recent very minor loss along the splits.
The paint texture and impastoed highlights are retained and are visible through the foliage in particular.
The naturally more thinly applied passages, the ledge, with its broad energetic brushwork, have become more transparent with time and over exposure of the ground layer is visible in some places.
A moderate loss of depth to the interior of the basket has resulted in compromised modelling.
Minor pitted loss to the background has been replaced.
Fine naturalistic details through the fruit are well preserved and chromatic and tonal integrity are well retained.
The painting presents well.
