Description
Jade Rude is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist educated in Norway and Canada.
Alternating between playful and austere, Jade uses perception-shifting tactics to explore the relationship between reality and representation.
Text is integral part of Jade Rude's practice. Her sculpture "Nice To See You" blurs the responsibilities of mirror, signage and slogan.
The functional element (the mirror) becomes decorative, a salutation becomes signage and the physicality and message of the mirror upstages the viewers' reflection.
Besides the fact that the sculpture is sexy and chic, any opportunity to feel self-critical is bumped by the self-affirming slogan. And how clever is it to encounter a mirror, that expresses its happiness by seeing the viewer.
Jade Rude's beloved text-based pieces enliven any space and bring a smile to any spectator.
Caviar20 has been a long admirer and champion of Jade Rude's precise aesthetic, minimal palette and her re-visioning of daily objects and familiar motifs.
