Description
Jakob Bokulich is a multidisciplinary Burning Man artist and painter hailing from a colorful background at the cross section of art and activism. Bokulich's recent success at the pioneering Sotheby's auction, "Boundless Space… The Possibilities of Burning Man" in 2021 propelled his career into the upper echelons of the contemporary art world. "La New Yorkaise [Abigail Tse]" is a potent and incredibly vibrant portrait in gouache and graphite on Arches paper. A contemporary commentary on the Covid pandemic and the associated injustices towards Asian Americans, Bokulich depicts a young Asian women covering her mouth with a mask on a bridge in New York. The scene's composition nods to Edvard Munch's 1883 "The Scream" while updating the hue to an extraordinary, otherworldly hot pink and blue, and the content to present events.
