Description
This painting, entitled "Secrets" is an alluring work by this renowned Belle Epoch artist. The two male figures are leaning over the table in deep conversation with the figure in the foreground covering his face as he speaks. Of particular interest are the glasses of absinthe in front of each character. This drink, popular in the 19th century, was known for its psychogenic and hallucinogenic properties as well as the high alcohol content. The drinks in this scene coupled with the exasperated expression on the woman's face lend this painting a rather comical glimpse into Parisian bohemia in the 19th century.
