Description
In 1939 Jean Hélion turned to figurative art. Interrupted by the war, he resumed his theme on leaving captivity in 1943.
This evolution reflected his sensitivity to reality. On his release, Hélion rediscovered everything that linked him to everyday life, particularly the street. Passers-by were embodied by stylized figures, while the chromatic palette is limited, dominated by a deep midnight blue. From then on, Hélion named each of these individuals from his imagination, and the first in this universe is Émile, a modern man in a suit whose eyes are hidden by his hat. "Émile au parapluie" is a preparatory watercolor to the painting of the same name in 1943.
