Biography
Jean-Luc Moerman is a Belgian contemporary artist best known for his paintings of amorphous shapes applied to well-known photographs. His mixed-media paintings, which use found images of celebrities, nudes, and politicians, are covered with elaborate tattoos that integrate his marks into the source image. His patterns references both Islamic and Japanese calligraphy along with graffiti, inspired by body art from around the world. Moerman’s work seeks to investigate the superficiality of media culture and the complex history of tattoo art. “I construct a universe, I invent a polymorphous, open reality made out of mutant, hybrid objects which no referent can explain or justify,” he has said of his work. Born on July 5, 1967 in Brussels, Belgium, his first solo show was in Germany at Galerie B.A. Mickan in 1995. The artist has since gone on to exhibit at the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, among others. Moerman lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
