Description
This charming portrait of a beautiful blue-eyed girl in a pink dress holding flowers in her hand. It's based on Renaissance portraits where the subject is pushed to the foreground and in the distant background, you see a landscape. It appears as if Raphael's "The Madonna of the Pinks" served as a reference point for the treatment of the hands holding a rose and also the color scheme. Jean Mclane / Maclane's work certainly suggests a close resemblance to the style of Robert Henri. She based all of her work on sound academic training. Henri however, had a richer paint surface. This work is quite beautiful to look at with a charming blue-eye sitter but it has been slightly over-cleaned and all of the magenta in the dress and other areas in the dress have been strengthened with inpainting. Despite the conservation work on the painting it in presents very well in person and has a joyful beauty to it. Signed and dated lower left. Exhibited Guild Hall, East Hampton and The Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts 125th Exhibition - Label of both on verso
Condition: Fair: This work is stunning but has been slightly over-cleaned and all of the magenta in the dress has been strengthened with inpainting. Additional inpainting in the hair and mountains. Light craquelure is mostly in the background.
