Jessie Wilcox Smith was one of the best-known illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. She excelled in a profession dominated by men, and her pictures of beautiful children won the hearts of millions of Americans. Between 1918 and 1932, she painted every cover for Good Housekeeping magazine along with several other popular periodicals. In addition, she illustrated several books, such as the famous Water Babies.

This charming Good Housekeeping cover depicts a beautiful toddler helping his mother put bright red apples in her apron in preparation for making a pie. Jessie Wilcox Smith’s covers often were removed from magazines for the purpose of framing and hanging as decoration in the home.
