Description
Joanne Tod (b. 1953) is a renowned Canadian artist and a master of figurative painting. Her paintings of interior spaces share a unique sense of familiarity, calling on varying visceral responses from the viewer. Tod is particularly curious in how precious objects are exhibited or presented in both public or residential settings. Click here to see an example.
Tod’s mastery of detail and composition is on full display in this intimate and intricate watercolor. Completed in 2022, “Bar Nunn, Wyoming” features a stylish contemporary interior with vast panoramic windows revealing the surrounding landscape. The fireplace mantle in the center divides and contrasts the warmth of the forest from the cool mountainous terrain. While this is a fantasy interior, the space’s artwork is what initially inspired Tod.
On the mantle is an example of legendary Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh’s iconic portrait of Winston Churchill, known as “The Roaring Lion.” Shot in 1941, the photograph remained in the Reading Room of the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa, where it was originally shot, until its mysterious disappearance in 2022. The title, Bar Nunn, Wyoming, is the artist’s conjecturing as to where this iconic photograph might be now. Read more about the artist, the photo and the theft.
Joanne Tod’s works can be found in many public institutions across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.
