Description
Joanne Tod (b. 1953) is a renowned Canadian artist acclaimed for her masterful figurative paintings.
Over the course of her illustrious career, Tod has depicted a wide-range of subjects. The human figure, pattern, museum display and interiors have been recurring and essential elements of Tod’s oeuvre. She is also one of the most celebrated living portrait artists.
For Tod, these past few years have been an incredibly fruitful period as she has enthusiastically experimented with watercolor. This unforgiving medium has enabled the artist to be more spontaneous without compromising the technical mastery she is known for.
She has also simultaneously harnessed instagram as a platform to briefly "exhibit" her works on paper. Strategically she has presented a grouping of watercolors - but only for a limited time. We highly recommend following @Joannetodstudio.
Tod has always been enchanted by the aesthetics and craftsmanship of decorative arts. Her cherished series of carpet runners that appear to march off the canvas are a fine example. In these recent depictions of vases, Tod revels in the details, shadowed curves and reflections on their surfaces. Like the best of her work there is a distinct balance between soft realism and precision.
Today, Joanne Tod's works can be found in most major public institutions across Canada including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.
