Provenance: Raised in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, John T. Scott graduated from the historically African American college, Xavier University and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Michigan State University. Scott returned to New Orleans and taught art at Xavier University for over forty years. A diverse and dynamic artist, Scott continually pushed the boundaries and explored different medias in his artwork.
In 1992 he won the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Fellowship. In his work, Scott explored the culture and history of African Americans. In the "1619 Not Yet" collage, Scott addressed the first-time enslaved people from Africa were brought and sold in the English colony of Virginia during August of 1619. Scott sought to reframe the narrative of enslaved people and the continued legacy of racism and inequality in America.
Condition: **Not removed from frame for condition report. It is float mounted, so all four edges are visible. Pin holes on corners; no signs of past restorations. Good, strong colors; some rippling of paper particularly along top edge. Frame with surface marks and nicks.
