Joseph-André Motte

(French, 1925–2013)

Joseph-André Motte was a French furniture and interior designer, considered one of the most influential Post-War European designers. The artist is known for his experimental use of untraditional materials, such as plywood, rattan, foam, and aluminum in his designs of chairs, lamps, and tripods, to create a variety of textures on the surface of his pieces. In addition, his geometric designs remodel classic constructions to maximize function, as seen in his Samurai armchairs which function both as seating and as a coffee table. He is most commonly associated with his design for the Steiner chair which was fixed at a reclined angle. Born on January 6, 1925 in Saint-Bonnet-en-Champsaur, France, he went on to study at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris. After completing his education, he worked as a furniture designer for the company Bon Marché where he quickly rose to prominence. Throughout his career the artist worked on a number of public projects, designing furnishings for over 100 stations of the Paris Métro stations, Charles de Gaulle Airport, and renovated sections of the Louvre Museum. Motte died on January 6, 2013 in Paris, France. Today, his works are held in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others.
