Joseph Piccillo

(American, born 1941)

Joseph Piccillo is an American painter and graphic artist best known for his black-and-white images of horses in motion. His dramatic compositions depict horses running and leaping through mid-air at foreshortened angles, creating the sense they are jumping out from the pictorial space and confronting the audience. For example, in No. 1 (2011), done in graphite, a horse emerges from a black background and sprints towards the viewer, as though it is escaping off of the page. Born in 1941 in Buffalo, NY, he went on to study at the State University College at Buffalo and graduated with a degree in art education. The artist has been the subject of several solo exhibitions at galleries across the country, including the Chase Gallery in Boston and the Perimeter Gallery in Chicago. Today, his works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Albert-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Art Institute of Chicago, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. Piccillo lives and works in Buffalo, NY.
