José María Sicilia

Biography
José María Sicilia is a contemporary Spanish artist known for his evocative paintings which utilize wax and printer’s ink. By investigating light and matter in his work, Sicilia explores the space between appearance and absence. “Things appear and disappear—so that in the end you’re left with a kind of mirage,” he has explained of his interests. Born in 1954 in Madrid, Spain, he went on to study at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid before moving to Paris in 1980. The artist’s travels to Tangier, Syria, India, and New York, along with the paintings of Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich, have all contributed to the themes and processes in Sicilia’s practice. He currently lives and works between Sóller, Spain and Paris, France. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, among others.
