Description
This painting is inspired by my friend, Armando Durón, who shared with me the idea of re-imagining the Aztec love story of Popo and Izta through a feminist perspective. I know for a lot of Mexican American families, this iconic image of the Aztec man holding his love’s lifeless body is pictured in calendars. My mother had one of these calendars from the meat market (carniceria). According to the Aztec myth, the Aztec warrior Popo came home from war to find out her love had died from grief at the thought of losing him. He held on for days until he died and they became two volcanoes. The flowers are a deconstruction of my mother’s plastic tablecloths.
