Katy Stone

Biography
Katy Stone is a contemporary American artist who draws inspiration from sublime nature in her paintings and sculptures. “I’ve never been interested in actual pictorial representation but when I started to make work that was suggestive of actual things in the world, it opened up a deeper pool of meaning within the work, something that could be accessed in multiple ways by different viewers,” she has explained. Born in 1969 in Rockford, IL, she grew up in rural Iowa and went on to attend Iowa State University in Aimes, before receiving her MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1994. While still an undergraduate student, her painting professor introduced her to the works of Mark Rothko and Joan Mitchell. After earning her MFA, she started to use an even wider range of materials, such as tape, tar paper, feathers, and sequins. The artist currently lives and works in Seattle, WA. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Missoula Art Museum in Montana, the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, and the Boise Art Museum in Idaho, among others.
