Description
Like Gershon Iskowitz, KM Graham is known for her uplifting, dynamic and colorful interpretations of landscapes.
Kathleen Margaret (aka KM) Graham was born in Hamilton in 1932 (and died in Toronto in 2008). Graham was an anomaly in Canada for a successful women artist; she was primarily self-taught and only started painting when she was around 50 years old. She was a docent at the Art Gallery of Ontario. A friendship with Jack Bush was an important influence in her life. He inspired her and helped introduce her to art world.
Graham travelled extensively to some of the most beautiful sites in the Canadian wilderness like the Laurentians, or even more impressive and remote - the Arctic.
This namesake of this work, is a costal area of Canada, today known as Nunavut. It is closer to Iceland than most major Canadian cities. This drawing is a paradigm of Graham's style; soft rich colors, evocative of Matisse, complemented by the palette flair of the Color Field artists (like Helen Frankenthaler or Paul Jenkins)
