Description
Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto.
In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul, his works can be found in many other prominent public spaces around the world from California to Israel.
Located at St. Michael's College on the University of Toronto campus (at the NW corner of Bay St. and St. Joseph street), "Zen-West" one of the most elegant and impressive public sculptures in the city Toronto. The setting, Clover Hill Park, was recently remodelled and expanded.
"Zen-West" is a maquette (or domestically proportioned version) of this beloved public sculpture. Like the best of Eloul's work, this sculpture is created from three brushed aluminum rectangles captured in motion.
From each vantage point, no matter on which side the sculpture is placed, the sculpture appears different, more dynamic, and intriguing.
Eloul was born in Israel but educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy).
He represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. In the late 1960's he settled in Toronto, married Rita Letendre, and became known for his large outdoor public. sculptures. In many ways, he was a precursor for both Richard Serra and Joel Shapiro.
Many major institutions, in Canada and beyond, have examples of his work in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Israel Museum, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few.
Minor wear consistent with age. Overall very good condition.
