Description
Pupet Shadow Show
Wayang kulit is an Indonesian traditional art that mainly develops in Java. Puppet comes from the word 'Ma Hyang' which means going to the spiritual spirit, god, or God Almighty. There are also those who interpret wayang as a Javanese term which means 'shadow', this is because the audience can also watch the puppet from behind the screen or just the shadow. Wayang kulit is played by a puppeteer who is also the narrator of the dialogues of wayang characters, accompanied by gamelan music played by a group of nayaga and tembang sung by the pesinden. The puppeteer plays wayang kulit behind the screen, which is a screen made of white cloth, while behind it is an electric lamp or oil lamp (blencong) highlighted, so that the viewers on the other side of the screen can see the shadow of the puppet falling into the screen. To be able to understand wayang (lakon) stories, the audience must have knowledge of wayang characters whose shadows appear on the screen.
