Biography
Lauren Semivan is a photographer whose work uses science and architecture as proponents for surrealistic images. In her photography series Pitch (2014–2017), the artist utilizes a large-format camera, also used by photographers like Ansel Adams, to document her interaction with architectural structures she created. “My relationship to photography is essentially a continuous questioning about the world and my own experiences,” she once stated. “Artists, like physicists, are compelled to study forces running counter to the visible.” Born in Detroit, MI in 1981, Semivan went on to receive a BA in studio art from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, and an MFA in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. The artist currently resides in Detroit, MI. Her works are part of permanent collections at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MI, Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, MI, the Wriston Art Galleries at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, and the Elton John Collection.
