About this Artwork
Literature
Sheet steel and stone are the two most frequently recurring elements in Lee Ufan’s sculptures. “I ended up choosing the stone as the representative of ‘non-doing’,” says the artist. “Stone bears in itself a time as long as that of the Earth. This incalculable fragment of time is an element that can be analysed through science but remains an incomprehensible entity. It is a real object but one that overcomes the object itself.” The work exists when the chosen stone meets steel, in sharp plates or manufactured bars, which Lee Ufan defines as “products of the industrial society, [which] reconstitute, in a short time and in an abstract form, the components extracted from a natural mineral.” We are therefore confronted by an encounter between two states of the mineral world: one raw and extremely old, the other totally transformed by man for his needs. “If I stand between a stone and an iron plate, I am sometimes able to have a vision of the past and the distant future.”
