Lin Tianmiao

(Chinese, born 1961)

Lin Tianmiao is a contemporary Chinese artist best known for her large-scale installations of thread-bound objects. Often wrapping or binding synthetic bones or wooden frames with hair, silk, or thread, Lin brings up issues of traditional crafts and gender roles within contemporary society. “My work is like drinking tea. You understand how and what it is only after drinking it,” she explained. Born in 1961 in Taiyuan, China, as a child she helped her mother wind cotton thread for long hours and little money. During the 1980s, Lin studied in the Fine Art Department of the Capital Normal University in Beijing. Following her studies, she moved to New York with her husband the artist Wang Gongxin. During the following years Lin worked as a textile designer, before returning to China in 1995 to focus on her art practice. In 2013, the Asia Society Museum in New York held “Bound Unbound,” Lin’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing, China. Today, her works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and the Singapore Art Museum, among others.
