Liza Lou
(American, born 1969)
Biography
Liza Lou is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale sculptures and installations. Her seminal work Kitchen (1991–1996), is a 168-square-foot replica of a complete kitchen festooned with glass beads. “Here is this monument to women’s work, to the labor that is uncelebrated, to the mothers and grandmothers who baked pies, and cooked and sowed but yet are never thanked, the labor that is endless,” she explained of the work. Born in 1969 in New York, NY, she went on to attend the San Francisco Art Institute, where she became more interested in beads than in painting. This development was largely discouraged by both her classmates and teachers, but led her to embark on what became her first major work. The sale of Kitchen after being exhibited at the New Museum, enabled Lou to complete her second major piece, Backyard (1996). Lou currently lives and works between Los Angeles, CA and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others.
