Maria Gibert

Biography
Timeline
Maria Gibert is a California born painter (San Rafael, 1965) whose father is Spanish and mother American. She is currently living in London. She painted for the previous decade in Barcelona.
Gibert’s paintings are extraordinary not only in their technical control, but also in their thematic and poetic nature. Her style of painting draws on such sources as Balthus, Max Beckmann and Magritte, that should be defined as post-expressionism or meta-realism rather than surrealism.
The work of Maria Gibert has a narrative quality, personal and perhaps autobiographical, which has roots in a childhood full of melancholy that is chromatic, pictoral and creative-rich irony is deep in her work. Figures are depicted in odd situations, or appear as strangers in their environment, which is often theatrical or artificial.
Much of her work is fused with childhood fantasies, visions, dreams and journeys back and forth, past to present as to forgive reality; to find a new reality rediscovering her past in today.
