Description
Marinella Senatore’s 'Protest forms memory and celebration' (2019) is part of series of works in which protest banners are adorned with text drawn from the artist’s signal statements. While their aesthetic is reminiscent of the heraldic banners of the past, Senatore’s banners should be viewed as an instrument of protest associated with those seen at processions and strikes. Often deployed during Senatore’s projects for the School of Narrative Dance, 'Protest forms memory and celebration' delivers a sense of positive, optimistic empowerment.
In conceiving works that can be activated by the participants during her performances and protests, Senatore questions the role of the work of art and enacts a precise political operation of deconstructing the pyramidal creator-user relationship.
