Description
Marinella Senatore’s 'Protest songs have helped to shape history' (2017-2019) is a series of prints which weave together the artist’s interest in music and protest. Investigating the intersections between the past and present and referencing street art, protests, music bands and political action, this series is comprised of images taken from magazines, the Internet or the artist’s personal archive.
In the work, Senatore juxtaposes a recent snapshot of a jazz band made up of youths from the outlying suburbs of Rome with historical references to feminist protests. The figure of the majorette assumes a particular meaning for the artist, as in her oeuvre the figure often appears to celebrate the symbolic union between physical body and political action.
