Mark Grotjahn

(American, born 1968)

Mark Grotjahn is an American artist best known for his abstract paintings which strike a complex dialogue with the work of Russian Constructivist Kazimir Malevich, Color Field painter Barnett Newman, and Op Art painter Bridget Riley. Grotjahn’s work often explores the vanishing point of perspective, which he uses as a catalyst to create expressive and brightly colored paintings. The artist is also well known for his mask sculptures, made from bronze sheets and cardboard boxes. Born in 1968 in Pasadena, CA, he went on to attend the University of Colorado Boulder and later received an MFA from the University of California Berkeley. In 2008, he was the subject of the critically acclaimed solo exhibition “Dancing Black Butterflies” at the Gagosian Gallery in New York. Grotjahn lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. His works are presently held in the collections of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
