Martin Disler
(Swiss, 1949–1996)
Biography
Martin Disler was a Swiss painter best known for his naïve, expressive paintings and sculptures. With affinities to various avant-garde movements such as CoBrA, Neue Wilde, and Art Brut, Disler drew on psychological and mythical archetypes to further convey the angst evident in the formal construction of his works. Born on March 1, 1949 in Seewen, Switzerland, the artist went on to exhibit in both America and Europe alongside the likes of Francesco Clemente and Georg Baselitz. Disler exhibited in documenta 7 in 1982, and today his works can be found in the collections of the Stedejik Museum in Amsterdam, the Princeton University Art Museum, and the Portland Art Museum, among others. He died on August 27, 1996 in Geneva, Switzerland at the age of 47.
