Description
Mathews and Shaprio’s fourth state (of eleven), a previously unknown proof, printed in black only from the first plate, a fine impression, with strong burr, on laid paper with watermark VANDERLEY and Fortuna over letters VDL, annotated C in lower-left corner
One other impression of this state is recorded, but printed from plates I and III (location unknown).
It appears that Cassatt may have used this impression to transfer the image to a new plate, since there appear to be two plate marks and two (not quite coinciding) registration marks at the top.
